What is Nakshatra? The 27 Lunar Mansions in Vedic Astrology
Nakshatra are the 27 lunar mansions through which the Moon travels each month. Learn all 27 nakshatras, their ruling planets, deities, and significance in birth charts, naming traditions, and daily panchang.
Nakshatra (नक्षत्र) comes from Sanskrit: na (not) + kshara (to decay or perish) — "that which is imperishable." They are 27 distinct segments of the sky, each corresponding to a star cluster or asterism, through which the Moon travels during its monthly orbit of Earth. Nakshatras are one of the oldest surviving components of Vedic astronomy, predating even the zodiac signs used in Western astrology.
The Astronomical Basis
The Moon takes approximately 27.3 days to complete one orbit around Earth. Ancient Vedic astronomers divided the Moon's apparent path through the sky (the ecliptic) into 27 equal segments of 13°20' each, and identified which star cluster the Moon was passing through each night. These 27 star clusters became the nakshatras.
Because the Moon spends roughly one day in each nakshatra, the nakshatra system offers a finer, more personal granularity than the 12 zodiac signs — each of which spans a full month of the solar year.
360° ÷ 27 nakshatras = 13°20' per nakshatra
The Moon traverses one nakshatra in approximately 24–27 hours (varying due to the Moon's elliptical orbit).
The 27 Nakshatras
Each nakshatra has a ruling planet, a presiding deity, a symbol, and a set of associated qualities. They are divided into three groups of nine, each group corresponding to one aspect of the divine trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva):

The 28th Nakshatra — Abhijit
There is a special 28th nakshatra called Abhijit, located between Uttara Ashadha and Shravana. It corresponds to the brilliant star Vega — one of the brightest stars in the northern sky. Abhijit is considered the most auspicious of all nakshatras, and its brief daily window — roughly 48 minutes around solar noon — is called the Abhijit Muhurat, a period powerful enough to overcome most inauspicious panchang combinations.
Special Nakshatras to Know
Pushya — Ruled by Saturn, presided over by Brihaspati (Jupiter, the divine teacher). Considered the most universally auspicious nakshatra for beginning new ventures, especially purchasing gold, starting education, or performing ceremonies. Guru Pushya Yoga (when Pushya falls on a Thursday) is considered exceptionally powerful.
Rohini — The Moon's favorite nakshatra. When the Moon transits Rohini, it is at its most nourishing and creative. Many auspicious ceremonies are timed to Rohini. Krishna's birth nakshatra in many traditions.
Ardra — Ruled by Rahu, associated with Rudra (the storm form of Shiva). The monsoon season begins when the Sun enters Ardra, and the Ardra Darshan festival celebrates Shiva's cosmic dance. This nakshatra is associated with transformation through upheaval.
Janma Nakshatra — Your Birth Nakshatra
The nakshatra in which the Moon is located at the moment of birth is called the Janma Nakshatra (birth nakshatra) or simply the birth star. It holds lifelong significance in Vedic tradition:
Name Selection (Namakarana)
The traditional Hindu naming ceremony (Namakarana) uses the birth nakshatra to determine the auspicious first syllable of the child's name. Each nakshatra is associated with specific syllables — for example, Ashwini corresponds to the syllables Chu, Che, Cho, La; while Rohini corresponds to O, Va, Vi, Vu. This is why many Indian names carry embedded astrological meaning.
Vimshottari Dasha System
The Vimshottari Dasha is Vedic astrology's primary planetary period system — a 120-year cycle of planetary rulerships that governs the unfolding of a person's life. The starting point of this cycle is determined entirely by the Moon's position within the birth nakshatra. The nakshatra's ruling planet becomes the first dasha ruler.
Compatibility Matching
Traditional Hindu marriage compatibility (Ashtkoot Milan or Guna Milan) uses both partners' Janma Nakshatras to assess compatibility across 8 categories, with a maximum score of 36 points. A score of 18 or above is generally considered acceptable for marriage.
Nakshatra in the Daily Panchang
In daily panchang use, the nakshatra active at sunrise — called the day's nakshatra — guides several practical decisions:
- Auspicious nakshatras for muhurat: Ashwini, Rohini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati
- Travel: Certain nakshatras (Ashwini, Pushya, Mrigashira, Hasta, Shravana, Revati) are favored for journeys
- Surgery / medical treatment: Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Mula are traditionally avoided
- Agriculture: Rohini, Mrigashira, and Uttara nakshatras are favored for planting
The nakshatra system represents one of humanity's earliest attempts to track and interpret the Moon's movement with precision — a tradition that has evolved over three millennia from simple star-watching into a rich, living framework for understanding time and human experience.
